On 11th August High Peak Community Arts presented their 12th annual youth show to entertain the whole family, and this year we partnered with Glossop’s newest venue – The Empire.
The yearly project, Tall Tales, relaunched at Easter when the first ideas for the story began from a theme of ‘Undercover’. Nearly 100 young people have now taken part in workshops to develop the script and music and to learn new skills along the way, creating the tale ‘Strings of Power’.
Participants come from across the High Peak, including Gamesley, Glossop, Tintwistle, New Mills, Fairfield and Buxton – recruited at evening workshops in Gamesley and Fairfield and from the Saturday Film Cuts Club in Glossop. From 1st August they came together for the Tall Tales summer school to work with a team of professional artists and turn the script and music into an all singing, all dancing show for all the family.

Project manager, Sophie Mackreth said “it’s been wonderful to see new young people signing up and watch returning participants take on new challenges and grow through expressing themselves creatively. We are so lucky to be funded by Youth Music and Arts Council England to be able to provide music, art, film, drama and dance so we can cater to a wide range of needs and interests. And this year we are especially grateful to The Empire for supporting the project – the young people have got a huge amount from performing in a professional space”
‘Strings of Power’ is set on a future Earth of separated islands, where humans are in thrall to a band of evil puppeteers and their hypnotising metal band, The Casket Crackers. Throw in the last of the resistance, who hide away waiting for their moment, and you have a night of nail-biting intrigue and double-crossing fun! Will Granny Grace ever be reunited with her granddaughter? Will Salt Man realise the error of his ways? Will Dave recover the Echo-Chip?
