Gathering research for 13+ projects

We couldn’t run an intensive 13+ project this October as our funding application was unsuccessful (it happens!), so we are now taking stock and gathering more detailed feedback and ideas from our current 13+ contacts, so that future applications are well designed.

If you know anyone in this age range (including young adults) who would benefit from progression in arts and creative activities, or who are perhaps looking at their options for the future, please pass on this questionnaire:

Local Landscape: Global Future

For their most recent project our 13+ young writers’ group wanted to look at environmental issues, and were fortunate to receive funding from the South West Peak Landscape Partnership, so chose the theme ‘Local Landscape: Global Future’

We started in October 2019 with three days of activity at White Hall Outdoor Education Centre.  With an educational session with a Peak Parks Ranger, Jackie Wragg, young people experienced their local environment and did group research into the local natural world. We have found out about flora and fauna, our oceanic climate and our role in the global picture.

“We walked around White Hall and other walks to places that are new – it makes a change and it feels exciting, especially somewhere – like a woods with a really good atmosphere. It made us have some really good ideas”

In sessions with M6 Theatre’s Caroline Kennedy we watched clips of young climate activists from all over the world speaking at global events in defence of nature, and trying to influence the decisions of international agreements.

In October and in April 2021 we walked through a range of locations, from Corbar Woods, to Solomon’s Temple and Fairfield Low to increase appreciation for and knowledge of local walking routes.

“It would be nice to encourage more young people to go to these places if they’ve not been there themselves – maybe they would get ideas from it”

We found examples of Britain’s ‘Lost Rainsforests’ and tagged them to Guy Shrubsole on Twitter, who is mapping these examples of our oceanic climate at work.

“Mark spoke a lot about UK rainforests and mosses and lychens and that’s sparked an interest”

The young people involved used this information to design characters who interact with the local environment in different ways, with different motivations. These characters were then written into a story which animates the landscape and brings a range of issues to light. Over 4 Saturdays in January 2020 we devised dialogue between the characters which tells the story, before the project was brought to an abrupt stop in March 2020.
During the pandemic we met over zoom four times to refine and edit the dialogue into a script, now called ‘Gone to Ground‘, and finally in June 2021 we shot the scenes.

The older young people then met for ‘edit parties’ over 4 Fridays, working on graphics, sound design, and other video and audio effects.

“For the audience the theme overall gives a warning – an ‘act now’ warning”

One of the adult (amateur) actors we roped in said

“It think it’s brilliant. The young people have done so well – great storyline and some top acting! Well done to everyone and I think they had great fun!”

One of the first people to see the film said

“the end is quite dark, because although we find out what’s happened, it’s not a clear positive message. It’s a complex story”

Huge kudos goes to the core group who stuck with the project to the end and especially the editors who put a lot of time into getting the final result just right!

The finished film now seeks opportunities to screen, get in touch if you want us to bring it to your event!
The dialogue contains some mild swearing, and the content is probably not suitable for a young family audience.

THEME ANNOUNCED for Tall Tales 2020

It’s not as we know it – but we will still use the project to generate new original creative ideas and then work together to make a finished ‘show’ to share with the public.

This year’s THEME is:

Voices of a Changing Earth

We are thinking about different points of view on our natural world and the changes that we see, that we don’t see and that we’d like to see!

Over the next 13 weeks we will run workshops twice a week:

Mondays from 4th May; 6pm – 8pm

Wednesdays from 6th May; 3pm – 5pm

We aren’t tied to our own towns any more, so you can sign up for either session, but there will be limited places on each SO YOU HAVE TO SIGN UP.

Bear in mind:

  • We encourage younger participants to come to the Wednesday sessions, and older to the Mondays.
  • We encourage siblings in the same household to either sign up to different sessions, or to use different devices, so you can be in different breakout rooms during the session.

If there are spare places you can come to both sessions.

Weeks 1 – 4: Generating ideas (a bit like we used to do at the Young Writers’ Camp) and getting used to working online & finding out what people want.

Weeks 5 – 13: Focusing on skills and choosing things to work on. These sessions could include song writing, script writing, online music, filming, art, instrumental tuition – give us ideas in the first 4 weeks and we will plan from there.

Summer School??

At this point we have no idea if we can run a ‘normal’ Summer School, so we are keeping an open mind. We may be able to meet for workshops, but not open a show to an audience. We may be out of lockdown, or still living with bits of it – we will have to think creatively to work out what this year’s ‘show’ will look like…

If you didn’t come the taster session on Friday 17th April you will need to sign up to our online workshop guidelines before you can join the project.  Click here to see the guidelines.

Sticking together!

Re-launching our youth programme through the COVID-19 emergency of 2020.

Welcome to High Peak Community Arts’ youth programme.

This is a complete re-design of how we work with young people – so we can keep connecting and supporting young people who take part in our work.

We hope this new way of connecting will be a voyage of discovery into new tools and new skills – we all need some fun right now, and there are ideas waiting to get made… by US!

Our priority is to provide for our current participants, but we are working on ways for new people to join in.

If you are new to our programmes please get in touch with Sophie directly by email: sophie@highpeakarts.org, or get someone else to email her with your contact details and she will get in touch.

Current participants click here to find out how to sign up.

Young Writers’ Camp 2019

This year the camp ran from 15th – 18th April and we launched our new theme of SPACE!!

23 Young people age 8+ came together from across our youth programme to spend 4 days focusing on generating ideas and stories to use throughout the year.  On day 2 we had a trip to Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, and worked for the rest of the week at Victoria Hall in Glossop (the former library).

Feel free to browse our Collection of material, and look out for the show coming up in August which will conjure it all into an all-singing, all-dancing performance with music, drama, projections and plenty of surprises!

Enchanted Gathering…

Take a woodland, 12 animations, 6 songs, 3 dramas and 1 magical market place and step into another world…

Tall Tales have hosted their Forest of Enchantment, where the normal rules don’t apply and the audience met the inhabitants finding shelter, trust and magic.  Enchanted Gathering was our 4th annual youth performing arts show from the Tall Tales project.
Click here to see films from the Magical Market…

None of this would have been possible without the generous support of funders, Arts Council England, Tesco Bags of Helps, local Derbyshire County Councillors and the Music Education Hub.

We have been working with young people on Gamesley and Fairfield for the past 2 months, using stories and ideas from the Young Writers’ Camp. The groups have been learning instruments, jamming and singing together, and in August they joined forces for the 6 day summer school – finishing with our World Premiere public performance of Enchanted Gathering on 16th August at Longdendale Environmental Centre, Tintwistle.

Location: Longdendale Environmental Centre, United Utilities Bottoms Office, Woodhead Road, Tintwistle, SK13 1HS

Collecting from the Young Writers’ Camp 2017

Day 1 storiesThe elves are at work on the Young Writers’ Camp Collection 2017, with seven stories and dozens of characters jostling for position behind the scenes.

But here is a sneak peak from day 3, when we explored the hills of Crowden with our Peak Park Rangers Jo and Alex – finishing up with this quirky Compass Poem.  Enjoy!
