Mind Your Head at Poole’s Cavern

Mind Your Head poster less info webThe third year of Tall Tales has unsettled audiences in Buxton’s Poole’s Cavern with a journey into Poole’s Cavern they won’t forget…

Young performers from Glossop and Buxton welcomed the audience to their book launch, only for proceedings to be interrupted by the book’s contents disappearing back into the cave where it came from! Luckily the assembled public were willing to help find the characters and get the book back on sale. Setting out in four search parties they entered the cave to find the Water Goddess, the Fire Goddess, ghosts, bats, Roman soldiers and a Bronze Age man and at the very foot a medium trying to communicate (badly) with the former inhabitants of the cave.
When they met NoName they found someone forced into the limelight and shrinking from the crowds attracted to the book launch. He was so uncertain of his place in the world he couldn’t take part, taking all the characters with him. But along the way the audience had found letters which seemed to hold a clue, and together they worked out his name. Back at the visitors’ centre everyone called for Norman and he returned to take up his new identity. With all the characters gathered around him he found that “True friends will always be there for you!”
A cast of 22 performed to a sell out audience, with people coming from across the High Peak… And here is a first peek at what it looked like:

The young people from Glossop and Buxton created the show during a 6 day Summer School. Now in its third year, Tall Tales is High Peak Community Arts’ performing arts programme for young people across the district.  Each year the project starts in April with evening creative sessions in Gamesley and Fairfield.  People can come along to try new skills in musical instruments, vocals, writing or music production, and they sign up for the August Summer School.

In the first two years of the project we worked from published books to create the show.  In 2014 audiences saw Blue John, from the book by Berlie Doherty, and in 2015 we staged 100% Wolf by Jayne Lyons.  But now the young members of the project have demanded they create their own story, and so we launched the Young Writers’ Camp in April 2016, where young people from  all our projects and others from Manchester came together to be inspired at Poole’s Cavern.  They created characters and stories to fill our Young Writers’ Camp Collection, ‘Mind Your Head’.  Tall Tales has been working with these ideas ever since and now they have been able to set their show back in the caves that inspired it!

We’re spinning musical yarns again!

Tall Tales yr 3 flyer fairfieldWe are launching our Tall Tales programme for a third year and looking for new young people to join in the exciting programme to write stories and songs, play instruments and create visual art.  The first 10 sessions are based on Fairfield in Buxton and Gamesley and are open to anyone aged 8+ and free to take part.

For the last two years the programme has made a final show from a published book, which was Blue John by Berlie Doherty in 2014, and 100% Wolf by Jayne Lyons in 2015.  This year the ideas for the final show will be created by the groups themselves, starting with ideas formed at the Young Writers’ Camp in the Easter holidays.  Project Manager, Sophie Mackreth, said “anyone who wants to feel creative for 2 hours a week should come along and find out what we’re doing – you can write a song, form a band, make a giant pop-up book and work with everyone else in drama and music.”

We are able to offer the programme for free as it is funded by Arts Council England, the Derbyshire Music Education Hub and with contributions from two local councillors, Caitlin Bisknell and Dave Wilcox.  Previous years have shown young people develop in areas such as confidence, resourcefulness and team working – skills which contribute to their progress outside of the project.  The final performance will be part of the Buxton Family Festival – so the whole community can share in the achievement of our local young people.

For more information phone Sophie on 01663 744 516 or click here to check out what happened on last year’s project.

Sessions are:

Fairfield:  Wednesdays 6 – 8pm at Fairfield Sure Start, Victoria Park Road, Buxton, SK17 7PE, from Wednesday 27th April to 13th July (no session 1st or 8th June).

Gamesley:  Thursdays 4.30 – 6.30pm at Gamesley Community Café, Winster Mews, Gamesley, SK13 0LU, from Thursday 28th April to 14th July (no session 2nd or 9th June).

Young Writers’ Camp

YWC front leaflet webOur first Young Writers’ Camp to brought together all lovers of ideas, stories and words, with 23 young people joining four days of creation.

Designed for all our participants on youth projects, including: Tall Tales in Gamesley and Fairfield; Film Cuts Club in Hadfield; Music Arts Pod in schools.

It wasn’t about pens and paper – it was about ideas, stories and lyrics!

At the end of the fourth day the Collection became ‘Creative Commons’ and anyone is free to use, adapt, change and give ideas a new life when they return to the real world.

And here are the filmed stories to watch:

100% Wolf!

On 7th August we staged our world premiere of 100% Wolf, from the book by Jayne Lyons. The show opened to the public at the Geoffrey Allen Centre, Gamesley and then two days later at the 100pc Wolf block smPavilion Arts Centre, Buxton.

“It was hilarious, it was amazing – and the talent!”

This was the culmination of year 2 of the Tall Tales programme, which began at the end of April in workshops at the Gamesley Community Cafe and Fairfield Dreamscheme in Buxton.  The two groups came together in this year’s summer school – and created the final show in just over a week.

“I know like, when you’re on stage, you might feel a bit worried and sick, but then when you get a bit closer to the end, you might feel a bit relieved that you’ve managed to get through it and not like had a breakdown!”

Watch the show here:

“and why is it you get more confidence?”
“Because it makes you much happier in yourself
Because it gives you better experiences…”

“I got stage fright – and I felt bit scared, like I couldn’t do it… but then I remember I felt alright, so then I could carry on…”

Tall Tales 2015 – The Summer School

01 IMG_1351.JPGThe summer school began when the two groups met on a trip to Manchester International Festival, to see the international premiere of Wonder.land by Damon Albarn. This inspirational trip was followed up with another trip into Manchester to the Art Gallery, where they worked in one of their studios using physical materials and digital methods to create themes and images for the show. Then they went to the open day at the Bridgewater Hall, tried out instruments, toured the building and had the chance to conduct part of the Halle Orchestra!

“When we went to Manchester Art Gallery we like got a word and we had to find pictures that summed that up – like the Prison Yard, and Like me and Leo found one, and it was like really foggy, like pirates on a ship.”

36 DSC_0090.JPGAfter the fun the rest of the summer school was at Hope Valley College music department, where the hard work began – with just a week to create their finished show!

“You had to writing bits with the instruments and people were singing it.”

“Yeah – we did the whole run through and it was actually great!”

Are you 100% Wolf?

100pc Wolf block smCome down to one of the two shows completing our second year of Tall Tales.  This year we have been working with the book ‘100% Wolf’ by Jayne Lyons and in four months we have worked with young people from Gamesley, Glossop and Fairfield, Buxton to create another outstanding show to captivate you – The Audience!

Don’t miss out on your chance to see and hear a show that combines humour, horror, music and visual treats to tell the story of Freddy the young werewolf, struggling to deal with some great expectations.

100% Wolf is the second show from High Peak Community Arts’ project Tall Tales, working in music and theatre with young people from Buxton & Glossop. The story comes from the book of the same name by Jayne Lyons, and takes us to the world of the werewolves who live among us. This first stage production tells the whirlwind tale of Freddy as he comes of age and transforms into a wolf for the first time.   All does not go according to plan when it turns out Freddy is not like the rest of his family. Can he overcome his fears and redefine what makes him and his kind 100% Wolf?

The show takes to the stage at the Geoffrey Allen Centre, Gamesley at 5pm on 7th August and at the Pavilion Arts Centre, Buxton at 7.30pm on 9th August. The project has been funded by the Foundation for Youth Music and Arts Council England and more than 50 local young people have worked with professional musicians, artists and theatre makers since April to create the music and material for the performance.

In weekly workshops in Gamesley, Glossop and Fairfield, Buxton they have worked with instrumentalist and composer, Andy Smith, theatre maker, Paul Hine, and a host of other musicians with skills in vocals, digital music, song writing and instrumental playing. They have also worked with visual artist, Katy McCall and digital artist, Andrea Pazos to develop visual ideas for the final staging. Now the two groups will meet in an 8 day summer school to put all their ideas together and form the young company who will perform on 7th and 9th August. Audiences can expect a live band, singing, dance and drama, with a distinctive set and live projections to conjure up the world of a werewolf dynasty!

More information about the project and video clips from the workshops are available at www.highpeakarts.org, or find High Peak Community Arts on Facebook and Twitter (@HighPeakComArts).

Performances will be:

5pm, 7th August, Geoffrey Allen Centre, Winster Mews, Gamesley, SK13 0LU; Tickets £3 (£1 concessions), available from Gamesley Community Café, or on the door.

7.30pm, 9th August, Pavilion Arts Centre, St John’s Road, Buxton, SK17 6XN; Tickets £4 (£3 concessions), available from Buxton Opera House box office 01298 72190

Tall Tales 2015 – The Workshops

Tall Tales 2015 launched in April on Tuesdays at the Fairfield Dreamscheme in Buxton and on Wednesdays at the Gamesley Community Café.

01 photo05.JPGMore than 35 young people from the two estates have taken part, with 20 coming together for the summer school at the beginning of August.
The young participants have picked up new musical skills in the first workshops and then brought them together in song writing, drama and set design with our team of professional performing arts practitioners. They have worked with composer and instrumentalist, Andy Smith, song writer and digital musician, Caro Churchill, song writer and poet, Lucy Jackson, opera singer, Daisy Barker, instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, Aidan Jolly and music technologist and sample maker, Kristian Gjerstad. Then later on drama practitioner, Paul Hine and digital artist, Andrea Pazos joined in to create the other elements of a performance!

26 DSC_0053.JPG“I think my favourite session was the part where, me Ruby and Jack and Jess and her friend, we did like a song and it’s got like a hand clap in it, like a little beat with our hands, and we did it all ourselves with a bit of help from Caro, and then like we keep on getting the tune wrong, but then we soon got used to it, and then we had to perform it to everyone – and we were just like facing the table to not look at everyone, and some people was just videoing each group, and like yeah it was okay and so we were trying to think of a part for where Ruby could play flute in, but it didn’t actually quite fit…”

10 DSC_0021.JPG“I remember that I worked with Kristian, I brought my violin and we made all noises and made sounds, so when we did that, he put them on this cardboard piece attached to this wire, so when we press it it plays our sound we made.”

Next they all go on to meet at the Summer School and create the final show!
