What a lovely hot day in High Lea Park!
We had recycled stuff artist, Nicky Ward, with the people of New Mills making a 3D canvas of the town. The pictures speak for themselves!
And just outside the yurt our Shout Action team were fundraising for their next film – with the Human Fruit Machine!

HPCA will be hosting a recycled arts event in the yurt, at the One World Festival 2013, led by Nicky from the Bowerwirks.
The event is free, open to all ages and we will be making a collage from scrap, so please bring your rubbish with you on the day

Whaley Bridge Water Festival 2013
In a complete reversal of last year’s wet wet water festival, at this year’s event the sun cracked the flags and record numbers were recorded at all events. Well done to everyone who organised the event and to everyone that came along. Also well done to our artist JIM MEDWAY who created a great activity in the yurt, in the shape of Canal Boat lettering/printing. We had hundreds through the yurt doors, lots of great art and a fantastic summer’s day.
Glossopdale Research Project
Some of the research from the ongoing Glossop Research project is currently touring the local libraries and is also available for any groups, schools etc, that want to use the display. The exhibition has been to Gamesley Library already and was well recieved. Its next outing will be at Glossop Library from Monday 10th June until Monday 24th June. There are loads of photos, quotes and facts as well as the Glossopoly game made by pupils at Glossopdale Community College. If your group would like to host the exhibtion please get in touch.
There are some films and pictures related to this project that we will post up soon, so keep an eye out for them.
The research is being conducted in partnership with Leicester University and is part of project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the project is titled
Revisiting the mid-point of British community studies
And the university are interested in exploring how communities, and community studies, have changed over the course of the second half of the twentieth century and into the 21st century, focusing attention on the town of Glossop. This town in north west Derbyshire is around 13 miles from the centre of Manchester, and was subject to a major study by staff from the University of Manchester in the 1950s, which was published in 1959 as Small town politics.
Whaley Bridge Water Weekend
The High Peak yurt will be out and about again this summer and if you have an event and would like us to be there, please get in touch. We have already been out to Hadfield, where we had a great day despite the rain at Hadfield Train Station with the Hadfield Hall Group and local story teller Helen Appleton on May 12th 2013.
This weekend 7th – 9th June is the wonderful Whaley Bridge Water Weekend and we will be there with the yurt and local artist Jim Medway who will be leading a Canal boat letters workshop. So why not come along and give it a go. Here is a link for the event, hope to see you there.
Funding Success for the Youth Arts Programme
Two projects for the Youth Arts Programme will be getting off the ground this year, having recently received much needed funding from Children in Need and Youth Music.
The Film Cuts Club began life as a pilot in Glossopdale Community College, Learning Support Base, over 2 years ago. The short programme produced the animated film “The Dark Devil” and showed great benefits for the young people who took part. The team at the school were so pleased with the results that we worked together to write an extended programme which could go to other schools in the area as well. Children in Need asked us to make certain changes and re-submit our application, but now they have committed 3 years of funding to help us spread the benefits to three schools in the High Peak. At the same time we have been working with the Peak and Dales Support Centre in Chapel en le Frith, to design a one year programme of music activity. The centre is the only Key Stage 4 Pupil Referral Unit in the High Peak and they are in desperate need of new tools to broaden the education they can offer the pupils registered there. Created by the D café project, a group for people with dementia and their carers.
