The Shout Action team are campaigning hard to start a new film project.

This team of around 15 young people from the rural town of New Mills, Derbyshire are all in year 8 at the local high school and have recently worked with us to complete their first film project, which they wrote, shot and acted in together.
“We’ve loved the experience and jumped at the chance to write a new film idea to go forward to the First Light Online funding programme. Sadly we’ve just found out that the bid was unsuccessful, but they gave us such positive feedback that we can’t help feeling the project idea should live on.”

We have successfully raised £1,270 to fund Phase 1 of the project – where we will develop the storyline, write the script and plan the shooting schedule – i.e. the pre-production phase. Most of this budget will go towards working with a professional film maker, so that we reach the highest standards and keep learning the tricks of the trade.

Now we are fund raising for Phase 2 – the production phase. We need £1,125 to pay for professional film maker, Matt Kowalczuk to work with the group during the shoot.

So what’s the film idea?

‘File Not Found’ will be a character-based narrative following the peculiarities and friendships found in a small café of the same name. Soon these very personalities threaten the survival of their community and they search for a solution. The chosen genre will be dark comedy; a bit like a children’s version of ‘The League of Gentlemen’ meets Amélie. The film will have over the top quirky characters that seem flawed as individuals and are an annoyance to the local society. But the sum of their parts will make them save their sanctuary, the café.
We will learn about the make up of the café owners and their customers through snatched conversations and overheard gossip. A sense of confusion is created by one character’s belief in wild conspiracies, and another’s conviction that he is starring in a film. There are details that only the audience sees (like the crew person who pops up to do his makeup) and a sense of secrecy as different people talk direct to camera. A series of small mistakes put the café under threat; there is a visit by The Inspector and the owners are given an ultimatum.
Just when despair is taking hold, the most unlikely saviour steps forward – their most awkward customer. They propose a daring attempt on the World Record held in something culinary – and in the final scene they show the audience that a bunch of misfitscan pull together to achieve – almost – anything!

Super Hero Day draws near!

Have you ever jumped the Heroic Hurdles in a Cape of Courage? Or dodged the Dodgeball of Destiny to reach the Gate of the Greats? Then Super Hero Day could be all the bank holiday fun you need, from the young people of the Shout Action Project.

Shout Action is a group of around 15 young film makers from New Mills, and they are fundraising for their next film-making project. With help from High Peak Community Arts they have already launched a Crowdfunder campaign on www.crowdfunder.co.uk , and this event will contribute to their target to raise money for a professional film maker to help them on their next project.

Super Hero Day will appear at New Mills Primary School on Saturday 4th May from 11am – 3pm. Come along to take part in all things Super Hero; watch their first film ‘Super Chowder’, have your fantasy portrait taken; compete in the fancy dress competition (Super Heroes only, please) and try your skills on the assault course. There will be refreshments on sale and a special guest appearance from The Evil Hunicorn himself. If you’ve got a great arts idea and don’t know how to go about getting funding, Grants for the arts could be for you.

Arts Council’s East Midlands team is holding an event to encourage people to make their first application. There’ll be advice from successful first-time applicants, Local Authorities, NPOs and those who were turned down the first time but used that experience to re-apply and turn their ideas into reality.

Funding Success for the Youth Arts Programme

Two projects for the Youth Arts Programme will be getting off the ground this year, having recently received much needed funding from Children in Need and Youth Music.

The Film Cuts Club began life as a pilot in Glossopdale Community College, Learning Support Base, over 2 years ago. The short programme produced the animated film “The Dark Devil” and showed great benefits for the young people who took part. The team at the school were so pleased with the results that we worked together to write an extended programme which could go to other schools in the area as well. Children in Need asked us to make certain changes and re-submit our application, but now they have committed 3 years of funding to help us spread the benefits to three schools in the High Peak. At the same time we have been working with the Peak and Dales Support Centre in Chapel en le Frith, to design a one year programme of music activity. The centre is the only Key Stage 4 Pupil Referral Unit in the High Peak and they are in desperate need of new tools to broaden the education they can offer the pupils registered there. Created by the D café project, a group for people with dementia and their carers.

Spring and Summer Programme 2013

We will be putting up our yurt and running a “Bugs and Beasties” craft session

Current dates and project New Mills

We meet Thursdays 10.30am – 1pm at Springbank Arts Centre, Springbank, New Mills SK22 4BH.

This project runs till May 16th.

The group is working on a Comic/Cartoon project with artist Jim Medway and will learn basic comic/cartoon skills. They will then explore the local history of New Mills through making their own comic strips.

The last project was creating our own blog, which you can find at peakabout.wordpress.com , with artist Kooj Chuhan.

The next project will explore moorland conservation through felting, with artist Carol Wilson, including a trip out to Edale Visitor Centre. Starts May 23rd.

This project runs till July 1st. (not meeting Bank Holiday Mondays)

The group is working on creating their own animated film (using stop frame animation) with artist Sophie Mackreth.

Dragon’s Nest

Buxton Project eARTh did a project from January – March , called ‘What’s in a Box?’ with artist Katy McCall. After exploring with a wide range of media, each participant started with an empty box…and then created anything they wanted.

To inspire us, we visited the First Cut Exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery, where we also held our own workshop in one of the gallery’s studios. We finished with a wide variety of art work – from a Dragon’s nest to pop up universe..

We will be making a film of the boxes, as well as holding an exhibition….. watch this space !
